East Durham Veterans Trust has a fully active social inclusion programme that is designed for the veterans and their families.
You can find out more details of what we are offering to the veteran community as part of our social inclusion programme by watching the video above. Our weekly event schedule is detailed below.
Monday- Peer support group, a group designed for people who are struggling with mental health, can feel their mood has changed and are starting to feel low or just a place to come along and talk. The group often brings different topics, all of the group gets the opportunity to speak and to pass on their experiences which other members of the group can benefit from.
Tuesday - Tuesdays see The Bread and Butter thing come to East Durham Veterans Trust, this is a food charity that provides 3 bags of food for £7:50. For more information please check out the bread and butter thing website.
Wednesday - The First Wednesday of every month sees our monthly drop in, we work alongside Veterans UK, SSAFA and AFOS to be able to provide a drop in service where veterans and their family members can get the support with mental health, addiction, housing, benefits, debt, pensions and claims from in service. The drop in service is proving to be extremely popular with the veterans community and we are able to allow people to walk through the door and get whatever help they may need.
The second and fourth Wednesdays we have a walking group that ventures out into the local area. The walk is designed for people of all abilities. After the walk we return to the veterans hub where we will provide free beverages and in some cases a bite to eat. The walking group is available for all members of the community as part of the community resilience programme.
Thursday - Every Thursday you can find us at Blackhall Community Centre for our veterans coffee morning from 10:30 - 12:00. All veterans and their family members are welcome to attend.
Friday - Fridays are always busy at East durham Veterans Trust, with three different social inclusion groups running from 10:30am. These include woodcarving, craft and model making. This is open for all veterans and their family members.
Straight after theses groups we offer free lunches as part of our Mates and Bates programme. The lunch changes every week so there's plenty of variety and we also cater to the needs of the group. As well as the free lunch, every week there we receive a donation of food from our friends at Great Annual Savings, which many people are able to take away.
Saturday - On the first Saturday of every month we have our ever popular Veterans Breakfast Club from 09:30 - 12:00. Veterans can purchase a full breakfast for £4 and all of the profits from this goes towards our end of year Christmas party.
Every other Saturday we offer free brews and bacon sandwiches. This is another great social inclusion group where people can come along and join in with plenty of brews and banter with other members of our community.
Monthly Activities - Every month we also have other activities that our community can join in with. These include monthly fishing trips as well as family trips which are extremely popular. Fishing trips are based on land during winter and in the summer we look to head out to sea. Our family trips include a wide range of activities and we ensure that we have trips that we believe everyone can benefit from.
